In playing minecraft yesterday i was working with a mob water farm on a zombie spawner. I let the spawner run for 1 hour and 15 minutes. In killing all the zombies I went from level 5 to 27.
I then let the farm run for 8 hours while the game was very laggy I managed to kill all the zombies in the farm area and went from level 27 to only 42.
I think there is a bug in how many xp orbs can be created or how many the player can absorb at one moment in time I am unsure which.
I can provide additional details and screenshots if needed.

While I agree I dont see it eating up that much exp to gain less tthan the initial test when taking it to a factor of 6.
While i dont know the actual number of zombies that appeared i can go make a controlled test and copy the world if needed where i know the exact number of zombies i created using a spawn egg.
Have you allowed for the fact that level increases require more experience points each time? To go from level 26 to level 27 you have to add 92 points, but from level 41 to level 42 requires approximately 211 points. Sorry, was replying before the latest comments showed up for me. Level 5 to 27 takes 1034 points. Level 27 to 40 take 1734 points. I think 40 to 42 would take another 413 points, so a total of 2145 from 27 to 42.
Maybe a better way to say it is level 27 takes a total of 1089 points, level 42 about 3333 points (over 3 times as many).

After level 30 it also takes more EXP to go from level to level, so that may have eaten up some of it, too
