Since the recent update,
There is a bug when placing blocks.
When placing blocks continuously (by holding the button down):
after about 4 blocks, the next block will be an invisible cube
no more blocks will be placed successfully until releasing the button and starting again.
This prevents players from building areas quickly, and restricts continuous-block placement beyond about 4 pieces.

The invisible block never appears; placement ceases until you release and re-hold the button.
This type of behavior is similar to when you play on a server and there is a lot of lag. I've been on laggy servers when you place a bunch of blocks that are invisible, then usually get disconnected shortly thereafter or continue to lag.
Myself and all my friends who play on my world were having the same problem - we just referred to it as 'block lag.' My friends tried to reconnect to fix the problem.
Honestly it was an ongoing issue, so I gave up on continuous placement, and haven't tried in about a week.
My world is on a Realm, if that has any significance to the bug..
Yeah this issue is a bit irritating, I planned to cover the floor with sand blocks, but can't place them continuously, even when placing two of them quickly one disappears. It is a problem is realm and single player world as well.
Now its hard to do large scale building projects due to the block lag. It had been verified by some of my friends playing in the realm.
This problem exists in mcpe, windows 10 edition too
Whether or not any of these variables have any significance to the bug, our world is: Originated on Xbox One Edition, converted, Survival Achievements enabled, and on a Realm.

Same issue, xb1, win 10, IOS on a realm. You place about 4 blocks than it stops until you start again. It happens with crop placement or harvesting also. Basically any action where you hold down the action (right trigger) button on. It broke my microfarm and dumped me off a high pillar of coal blocks. My guess is all the tweeks they have done to block placement and crop harvest over the last few updates.

I couldn't reproduce this in 1.2.13.54 on Windows 10. However, the invisible cube might be related to an effect I see where there is a delay between hearing the placement sound and the block being rendered. On my system it only happens occasionally (especially soon after opening the world) and doesn't interrupt block placement, so they might not be related. On the other hand, I assume your invisible block never appears, and if that's what prevents block placement from continuing, it might be the same thing happening to both of us but my system manages to get past it.
