On Realms I have a very large stable of breeding horses. I tag each horse with their tested attributes, including health, to make pairing easier. I have had two horses lose hearts compared to their tagged values. The first time I thought I had just mislablee the horse, but the second time it happened to my 15 heart horse: he lost 2 hearts permanently. I’ve bred him a lot, as he is one of my only horses with 15 hearts. Is this by design?

I'm not aware of any permanent reduction the game does to horses' health. So that I can try to reproduce this, could you please tell us what you mean by "tagging" them? I don't know of any game function for doing this, although there is a /tag command I'm not familiar with so I'm wondering if that's what you mean.

“Tagging” = Attaching a name tag. I edit the name tag with a name and the attributes, then put it on the horse.

It has happened to 3 horses that I can tell.
The hearts are not there, but it seems they can still be restored by feeding. And if the horse takes a small amount of damage it seems the hearts stay unchanged until it takes enough damage to get it down to under 13.
After the 1.8 update the horse I originally posted about went back to 15, but the next time I logged in was back to 13.
I've bred this horse at least 30 times, potentially as many as 50. It was the only one with good stats I had for a long while. I keep the colts in the pen with the parents until they've fully grown.
I keep them all in stables and realized he was on stone, so I went and replaced all the stone with dirt which then became grass. No difference though.
