Started a fresh world and made an underground base at y10. Made a nether portal, went to nether and came back. I never get back to my original portal. A new one is created. I break it and travel back to base and reattempt. Each time a new portal is made in the overworld.

Thank you for taking the time to get back in touch with me. This was exactly me problem. My overworld gate was at 315, 10, 9 and the created nether gate was at 55, 49, -1. That actually gate should have been in the middle of a lava lake. I made a new platform with a gate and everything links properly now.
Cheers,
bC

This is a common complaint. It's usually caused by an obstruction being present in the nether where the portal should be.
Try this: Get the X and Z coordinates of the overworld portal. Divide them by 8 (you can round or just throw away the remainder). These are the coordinates in the nether where the game needs to create the nether side portal. Go through the overworld portal to the nether. You'll probably find that it's at the wrong coordinates. If it's not within 16 blocks of the correct position, it can't link back to the same overworld portal. This usually happens because the correct position turns out to be over lava or inside a mountain of netherrack.
To solve the problem, figure out what is obstructing the place in the nether where the portal should be. If it's a lava lake, build a platform over it. If it's a netherrack mountain, dig a hole through it. Once you get within 16 blocks of the correct coordinates, build your nether side there. It will then link up the way you want it to.
If for some reason it's impossible to build your nether side within 16 blocks of the correct coordinates, then it's impossible to link any portal to your overworld position. In that case, all you can do is move the overworld portal.
