Using version 1.10 on Xbox One X
Problem was noted going back for the last couple of recent versions
When attaching a wooden gate to a stone type wall and another gate on an opposite and equal height regular type block, the two gates are mismatched in height (they are uneven). The one attached to the stone wall is lower than the one attached to the block.
This was not an issue on earlier versions of MC, going back at least as far as the version from a disc set game from about 2 to 3 years back.

In reference to Kevin's comment:
The problem is not setting double gates with each other when attaching to a stone wall on each side. Just when you attempt to attach them from a wall to a block. As to always, maybe on some version, however, I have an older version world that does not display this behavior, I just don't know what version it is using. Since I'm making this post off my computer I am not really sure how I can display any screen shots that would show this...

Ummm this has ALWAYS been an intended behavior. I'm not sure which update introduced it, but it's pretty old.
This was made because they wanted the fence gates to match the height of the walls, so they look better.
