Whenever I plant a tree that grows into a fallen tree, it only grows the stump part and not the fallen log part. So far, this has happened to birch and spruce.

It happened to oak the other day, too. I wonder if this is due to my trees being planted on single dirt blocks in a desert? I also had one there that was surrounded by grass, but it has a fence around it a few blocks away and it probably didn't have enough room to grow.
I just tested in creative world, flat world and I think it might be intended.
Fallen trees have a variable amount of fallen logs that it can generate. In a flat world, I got 3 to spawn. One having 4 fallen logs, one having 2 and one having none.
It's like normal trees, they have a variable size, which means variable amount of wood. It's just a bit unfortunate that fallen trees can generate a single block surrounded by vines.
