Crash when bringing tamed cats or dogs through a Nether portal

I am unsure of the exact nature of this bug, but I am willing to assist with a world download if necessary. The description is as the title states.

I brought 3 cats, all on leads, into a Nether portal so I could transport them to my house. I had previously done this with a single cat with no issue. However, when all 3 of them enter the Nether, and then I attempt to enter the Nether, the Realm crashes. When it restarts, the cats have completely disappeared, nowhere to be found. Bringing them in 1 at a time will not crash the Nether, even though all 3 are present.

This is reproducible the other way around as well; that is, if all 3 cats EXIT the Nether and then I also exit the Nether, the Realm will crash with the same result. This may be related to odd behavior exhibited by cats who enter the Nether while attached to a lead (they will glide when sitting as if attached to a lead, and cannot be made to sit without reattaching the lead).

I have a world download if necessary to help reproduce and troubleshoot the bug, although it is too large to attach. I reproduced this bug three separate times while on the Realm. Notably, this bug does NOT seem to be reproducible in a single player world; the game does NOT crash and I can bring all three cats into the Nether just fine.

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information to assist in troubleshooting this bug.

I think a copy of the world save might be useful here, yes please!

If you have a copy of the world available, you might like to upload a copy of it for investigation.

  • On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.

  • On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds

  • On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS.

If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

I do apologize for the delayed response. Here is a download of the world. As I mentioned in the post, this bug was NOT reproducible on a singleplayer world, but was reproducible multiple times on an active Realm. I did manage to get all of the cats through the portal one by one on my current realm, but I have a couple of backups for testing if necessary! Still really not sure what was going on, or if it will even be reproducible.

Can Confirm that's happened for me.

Brought two cats on leads through a portal. One cat made it through. The other cat sat in the portal (on the Nether side) staring at me. When I tried to interact with it (get it to stand), the game crashed. On logging back in, I found that about 5-10 minutes of work was undone (things like making sticks out of bamboo, making torches, sorting through chests, all were undone, like they never happened). This is on iOS PE.

This is still happening.
Tested with 3 cats and game disconnected, tested without cats and the game did not disconnect.
In this case I was able to connect right away after, but the game rollbacked.

This happens with dogs as well.

I tamed a dog and had it follow me into the nether not on a lead. When it crashes when I first enter the nether one of two things will happen. It will either crash and my dog will disappear. Or it will crash and my dog will reappear where I had it stand up from sitting. Still sitting.

sometimes I manage to get it in the nether without any problems. In which case when I exit the nether from another nether portal the game will crash. When I open the game again I'll still be in the nether but my dog won't. My dog will be back in next to the nether portal that we entered the nether in walking around.

Still happening on new release 1.17.10 and no activity on this bug...bump

I have experienced this behavior with both tamed cats and wolves in the past week (before the 1.17.11 update) on the Nintendo Switch. I get a "software closed" Switch error.

The game crashes when I'm in the Nether with the animal and try to return to the Overworld. In all instances I did not intend to bring the animal, so it was not on a lead — they just followed me in. The Nether loaded and worked as expected but once I stepped back into the portal, even if the animal was a few blocks away, the game crashed before the Overworld loaded.

Returning to the Nether and killing the cat solved the problem in one instance.

When I restart the game I'm back in the Overworld, where I assume the game last auto-saved.

This is happening consistently in my 1.17 world (with experimental features enabled). When I take a portal into the nether with tame dogs following me, they appear with me in the nether, but then when I go through a portal to return to the overworld, the game client crashes/exits. Logging back into the world, my avatar appears in the nether and the dogs are returned to their original position in the overworld.

Is this still an issue in the latest version?
