There is a report that the "soft mute" button might be on and turning it off may restore the sound.

I started having this issue a few days ago. I did not know what "soft mute" is, but the comment above made me think to check the little switch on the side of my iPhone that turns the ringer off, and voilà! My sound is back!

Why on Earth the ringer on/off switch should toggle the game sounds in Minecraft is beyond me.

I am so glad to not be the only one. I have an android phone and an Ipad. The sound is iffy on both..

Happens very regularly here on a current-model iPad mini. Sometimes sound just disappears for no reason I can discern.

Thank you for your report!
