In creative mode, when spawning in a villager using a spawn egg, the villagers automatically come with professions. These professions can't be changed and they will not link to any workstation, including one for their profession (i.e. I was trying to get a farmer, kept spawning eggs until I got one, put a composter down and he wouldn't link to it).

In case anyone else comes across this, I have been taxing my brain as to why the villager spawn egg, spawns all types of villagers, but no matter how I try they will not connect to a workbench, even one they are currently shown as for example a cleric with a brewing stand. 'GoldenHelmet' mentions trying to add a bed. I did that in a completely new creative world, and yes, it worked after a slight delay. So if you are struggling. try adding a bed. Not sure why I never had this issue before though.
Thanks, CJSGOOSE
Villagers will not link to workstations until they are in a village, and you need at least 1 bed to create a village. Does placing a bed solve your problem?
