Nether Portals Opacity at 0% on spawn

When a player enters the portal and respawn at the other side this is what can be seen.

The portal keeps blocking the player view until it leaves the portal blocks. On situations where the portal is spawned with an open end to lava this problem becomes very annoying

For comparsion, this is what the player sees after teleporting in the java edition

The label for this is vanilla-parity. The nether portal was not a feature when the bedrock edition began and still needs fixing.

Affects 1.16.200.56 Beta

A issue on Java also regarding the nether portal animation is reported at MC-180.
In addition, the following was noted on the Mojira Discord:

/|\ (ideal behaviour, original Java behaviour)

Full intensity at entrance, fades out quickly

  1. /‾‾‾‾| (second Java behaviour)
Does not play at all from the start

  1. /‾‾‾‾|/‾‾‾‾ (current Java behaviour)
No animation at start, but begins to play and stays at full intensity until exiting portal

  1. /‾‾‾‾|‾‾‾‾ (current Bedrock behaviour)
Remains at full intensity until exiting portal

The vertical line | indicates teleporting to the other dimension.

Affects 1.17.40.20

Can confirm in 1.20.62

This occurs because the “opacity” is actually a fog that becomes more opaque/thicker over time based on the player being inside of a portal block (just like powder snow fog or lava fog), and the time does not reset when the player changes dimensions. This makes it more difficulty to reproduce in creative mode because portal travel is instant.
