Just a note on the realism and technicalities here: lightning sounds (crash and rumble) have a max range of 16,000 blocks, which closely matches the real-life audible range of thunder, i.e. 16 kilometers or 10 miles. In-game they begin to get quieter at 100 blocks away, and they do not play at all if the lightning strike is beyond of your render distance. The volume, max range, and distance at which to begin attenuation can be changed with resource packs.
