Leaving my description for continuity:
By looking at my realms backups I can see that sometime between 21:42 on 29/08/19 and 21:22 on 30/08/19 Minecraft realms reports it is on version 1.12.1 (screenshot attached) whilst the highest version available to download from Windows store and Google play is 1.12.0. This obviously causes an issue when you download a copy of the realm. Download works fine but when you attempt to open the world you get the message shown in screenshot #2.
Downloading the latest backup that is on 1.12.0 in the screenshot works perfectly fine as it should.

I will add that if you join the beta program it does fix the issue and you can open the world. However you can't join any realms while in the beta so not exactly a fix
Same exact issue here. Was going to add a texture pack to my realm and found this out. This is quite an error, not just a bug!
The problem is that it is in a newer version. Backups shows there was an update. 1.12.0 to 1.12.1. so its kinda like where in beta and cant opt out. {NO FIX}

Identical situation. Realms backup versions updated about a day or so ago. No announcement by Mojang about this change. Now we cannot open downloaded copies of the world for investigation of any issues until the client update rolls out.
We were about to launch a new themed realm. Now how the heck are we supposed to add a texture pack to the world if we cannot open the world locally? Thanks Mojang!
Any sort of update to Realms MUST be communicated via game announcements on the Minecraft Discord PRIOR to it being done. THIS is exactly the type of non-transparency that irritates your Realms Community.
