I too use MCEdit to create villagers with the piston head final trade to stop more trades being created.
I personally think that this should be fixed. The client even crashes if the valid trades not using item 36 are made.
The crash should not be the client "working as intended", I'm sure Mojang stop the crash.
I don't believe this is a duplicate. The issue you linked to specifies only a problem with SRV records whereas this is with direct IPs also.
The issue you linked also states that they are still able to connect whereas in this I cannot.
The blocks cannot be placed in the helmet slot with default minecraft however with the use of mods or inventory editing it is possible.
The only problem is the green tools etc when a leaf block is on the players head.
This must be a bug, I cannot see any issues that could occur from being able to open a GUI while in a portal.
This is a big issue for some players as it can result in them not being able to play on servers.
For example if there is a portal blocked off in some sort of protection such as spawn protection then players will get stuck in that portal and have no way of escaping.
