The problem appears to be reduced both in frequency and duration after enabling "Local Network" for Minecraft under "Privacy" in the "Settings" app.
The problem is still there in 1.16.221 even after deleting an re-installing Minecraft.
The problem appears to be unchanged in 1.16.220.
For me the issue is in 1.16.210, and multiple, but not all, previous versions, including the one before this one.
The exact issue is that when loading into a world, newly created or old, it will frequently hang in the "loading resources" phase for several minutes (not that I have waited it out very often). It happens like 9 out of 10 times, i.e. occasionally I get lucky and it will load within a few seconds as it should.
This is on a 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9 (A9X, 4GB RAM, always on latest iOS).
After deleting the Minecraft app and re-installing it works again in the sense that it gets past the splash screen and I can create a new world, both with 1.14 and 1.14.1, must be something in my old worlds or settings or something cached that previously always let it crash on launch. What doesn't seem to work is creating a world with The Legendary Phoenix template, it just hangs while generating the world and giving tips.
Still crashes from white splash screen with Mojang logo every time, even after updating to 1.14.
Still crashes at start with version 1.13.3 on iOS 13.2.3.
Here 1.13.2 still crashes from the white screen on launch, 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9 running iOS 13.2.2.
Edit: Minecraft was updated from 1.13 to 1.13.1 and now 1.13.2, always crashing, also after rebooting the iPad.
Addendum: The "potential workarounds" don't make any difference (I am the parent, no controls enabled, WiFi is standard WPA2, no VPNs or anything other than a standard NAT-router, and I'm not using an Xbox Live account).
Same here, updated to 1.13.1 and still crashes back to home screen from white screen with Mojang logo (1st gen iPad Pro 12.9, latest iOS 13.2.2).
(Also tried with Airplane mode, then iOS complains that it can't verify the App with the App Store for first launch.)
Same here, always crashes back to home screen from white screen with Mojang logo, Minecraft 1.13.0 on iPad Pro (1st gen, 12.9") running iPadOS 13.2.
For me this bug has been fixed, I can configure up to 40 right in the settings.
For me it was even stranger, with 1.1.x my render distance (on an iPad Pro) was 22 chunks which worked fine, then after installing 1.2 yesterday the maximum was 14, and today it's only 6.
I would really like to have my 22 back again! Thanks!
Update: After restarting the App I was able to select 14 again, but not the previous 22.
The problem seems to be fixed now, thank you!
Doesn't seem so, the linked issue sounds like some chests always crash the game, while my observation was more that "any" chest can occasionally crash the game, i.e. I can't remember the same chest crashing the game again immediately after restarting, it's more like access chest, crash, restart, access chest again and hope that nothing is missing, continue playing... Btw, this is pure single player and there were no hoppers/droppers whatever attached to the chests since I'm not using them yet.
For the record, I haven't ever had the problem with 1.17.10, but I also have a new iPad (iPad Pro 11", M1, 8GB) so that might have made a/the difference, too.
