I can't always reproduce this issue by following the steps instructed above but around 90% of the time it happens while I'm riding a boat. Never happened when on foot. Makes exploring the left bottom corner of the map very hard since I can't see neither myself nor the map. I've tried re-installing the game by deleting the ".minecraft" folder but didn't solve the problem for me. My client version is 1.4.4 and it's a vanilla - not modded.
I didn't know that. I've been actually using maps since 1.4.4. I hope they will fix this soon. It makes it even harder when the map level is 5 since the hand covers a lot more bigger area then. On the other hand, I guess Mojang didn't even confirm this glitch yet, did they? Also, there are multiple reports here all regarding this same glitch.
