Damn it. I had loads of progress from between world_before bug to world_144pre. Is there any way I can fix this short term (i.e with MC edit?)

Figured it out. Its not driver related but I think Windows 8 forgets to update the driver internally because when I wen to update it I had the most up to date version. To fix:
Goto settings => control panel => system and security => system => device manager (located at the left) => display adapters => your graphics card then click the top two options and update them. Its a super quick update because all it does is apply the update it already has. Works for me anyways

Nope, this isn't driver related. Its windows 8 related, before I updated to windows 8 I had up to date drivers which are compatible with windows 8. Now minecraft wont work with the same error message as you have said. All other games (half life, portal etc) worl fine for me, except minecraft.
