We have done that with our larger world. We started a new map with the nether update (our previous world was so extensively explored as to be impractical to make use of the new nether biomes). The problem is now since the update, items and even mobs will disappear in front of me. I was going to ride a horse and it blinked out of existence. Somehow I fell into the ground and died, all my stuff was not retrievable. It crashes so often, talking Items with it, or just disappearing important items at random, we can't even make progress to save. Though one time it vanished a stack of sticks but doubled my very nice pick axes. Wish it would do that more often...
