This sounds like you are out of free space on the Switch. Have you checked your Switch to see how much free space you have left? There might be some other files you can clear off to make enough space free to download it?

I can confirm this happens to me also, on iOS version. It seems to randomly occur. I think it happens mainly when I’m performing an action, such as digging, whilst moving around my view of the world. It makes me look up suddenly at the ceiling, or at the floor. It’s very disorienting, but it hasn’t killed me, yet!
This also happens to me. I’ve stopped trying to play with no internet connection. I’m playing iOS version too. You can sometimes get up to a couple of minutes gameplay before the screen locks, and nothing will respond within the app. You have to restart the app to get it working again, but it will just continue to lock until you have an internet connection.

Thanks to your comment, I got back my Glamdril enchanted sword and other enchanted items I thought I’d lost forever.

Thanks to Erik Harding’s comment, I got all my precious items back. As he said, if this air spawn happens to you, it will be at the original spawn point of the world when you created it. So if, you can, try to rush back there to reclaim all the items you lost. Thanks, Erik! Love you! 💕

This has also happened to me since the new iOS update around 13th Dec. 18.
The game started to go laggy/glitchy, and when I went underwater the screen would go black until I resurfaced. So I restarted the app after saving.
On reloading the game I appeared in mid air and fell to the ground and died, losing many valuable items such as my favourite sword Glamdril (it had an enchantment of mending, knockback, looting and sharpness) and enchanted armour and bow.
Unfortunately, I could not find the items on the ground anywhere when I respawned. Very tempted to switch over to creative to get replacements back, but then that will prevent me getting future achievements in this world. This really sucks.
Think I’ll take a minecraft break for a while.... hopefully, it’ll be fixed when I decide to play again, so I don’t lose more items that took a long time to make.
Still a problem for me... I’ve made a pool of water at origin point so I don’t die and lose Xp.... but it takes ages to travel back to where I was... what a pain in the neck! What with the other bugs of invisible wall and jittery screen, makes me play less and less.
