The drowned that usually can be seen holding them are actually invisible too. I don't have a screen shot right now, but a few of the drowned I went up against didn't seem to have one and suddenly I am taking like 4 hearts of damage. Then I seen the drown toss one and land next to me.

I see that my issue was closed as a duplicate of this issue however I want to point out that my issue only began occurring after the release of 1.9, I am on a vanilla/survival multiplayer server with no game mode changes, and I am running on Windows 7.
Prior to me upgrading my game and the server upgrading to 1.9, I had several villagers with no issues.
I'm having the same issue!
