Why is this important issue taking so long to fix? It's a regression, so the coding error should be easy to find.
For what it may be worth, the blocks to the right of the painting do not have to be solid blocks. I've attached a screenshot (taken with my resource pack enabled) showing two 4x4 paintings side by side to make an 8x4 mural, with a door to the right of the right-hand one. This is a stable configuration.
Steps to failure:
1. Enter world. (The last time I exited the world, I was flying.)
2. Fly to 556 80 151.
3. /fill 556 63 151 429 94 158 air 0 replace snow_layer (605 blocks filled)
4. Press Sneak key to descend, land on a tree.
5. Double-press Jump key, observe failure to fly.
I have been trying the snapshots in order to remove a large area of snow that was there when the world was created on Minecraft version 1.6. Since 1.7 was introduced, snow no longer falls on that area – rain does – but the snow does not melt, either.
In addition to trying to remove the snow, I have been testing to see whether using the snapshot caused all the paintings in the world to drop from the walls when I return from the snapshot to version 1.7 10, as they have done with snapshots from 14w25a to 14w28a. They also do this when returning to 1.7.10 from 14w28b. I have not filed this behavior as a bug because I don't think there is any guarantee that a given world will work properly in earlier versions of Minecraft once it has been touched by a later version.
I can provide a copy of my world save if that will help you to reproduce the failure.
In response to Blah's comment, i've tested inventory contents. I did not test every possible item, but I have tested with more than one item from each tab of the Creative inventory. It appears that if I have anything at all in my inventory, even just one item, the cursor malfunctions.
To reiterate, this failure does not appear if I do not have any resource pack enabled.
This issue was fixed for me in 14w25b. It remains fixed, with smooth lighting set to MAXIMUM or to OFF.
Color me a little dumb, but I have just now figured out how to attach them here. The first one is from 1.7.9, the second is from 14W20b.
I am seeing shading errors in 14w20b that are not present in 1.7.9. I have uploaded two images that show the error and also how the same exact scene appears in 1.7.9. Environment for both images is clear weather, clouds off, time = 6000, and the viewing direction is south-southwest.

Thank you. I have just tested sprint using the Ctrl key. Is it intended that a single keystroke (press and release) will engage sprint mode and keep it engaged until the player stops running? That is what is happening.
This bug, a major inconvenience to world builders, has been reported independently by several people. It was officially opened as an issue on 24 June 2020, more than four years ago, in Minecraft Version 1.16. With each subsequent release, it has been acknowledged, but as of today's date, 7 August 2024, it remains unresolved and unassigned. If you're not going to fix it, please just close this issue so we can all stop hoping for a resolution.
Thank you.
