I found a workaround for this. I turn off ‘text to speech for chat’, exit minecraft, then come back in and turn it on and it works. But I have to remember to turn if off every time.

I’m on touch screen ipad. I was able to enlarge the menu buttons at the top of the screen in settings, but the tool bar/inventory remains too small to use and there is no longer an option in settings to change the size.
