Same issue. PS4 digital edition. Bedrock. No previous editions,

After the Nether update I played for many hours in several sessions without a problem. This included saving, closing Minecraft and later starting Minecraft again and loading the saved game.

All of a sudden I cannot get past the red Mojang splash screen, even if left for several minutes.  

The pointer works fine when you're at a position within the area covered by the map, but when you are OUTSIDE the map area the pointer now behaves strangely and misleadingly. It moves WITHIN the current map (even though you're not located in that area).

Before the Nether update the pointer would hug the edge of the map, indicating where you are relative to the map in your hand.
