I fixed my performance issue (Bug 134611) by limiting my FPS to 30-40 FPS. It happens when the CPU can't catch up with the stuff that's going on in the game. When that starts happening the ticks become unplayable and the CPU becomes unable to catch up. By limiting your FPS to 30 or 40 (30 is recommended) then you'll notice less performance drops and the ticks will be averaging around 10-30 meaning that your CPU is able to catch up with the stuff in-game.
Alright. Thanks for the feedback.
Now this is weird..
Here's another forced game crash:

All I did was: leave the game paused and wait 10 minutes.
I get 50-70% less lag spikes.
Unfortunately, I cannot install the latest drivers but I've just done a clean install of the 391.78 driver (the driver I can install). I also reinstalled my Windows 7 64bit OS. Anything else that might improve performance other than that?
Alright, before I try, do I need to leave the forced crash here or would it be unnecessary?
Alright, what kind of CPU would you recommend me? 3.9GHz quad or will some overclocking be enough?
Also I highly doubt that it's my CPU since I run it in 100+ FPS when not moving and/or just walking around slowly.

I think there's a bug where block updates cause the whole chunk to redraw itself or something, but it hasn't been fixed. I think it's on the bug-tracker; I remember seeing something like it.
This is especially noticeable when pouring water over a wheat field; a lot of lag when before one of the pre-releases, no or barely any lag.

I've fixed this issue by limiting my frames per second to 30. My ticks are now constantly at 30 and below.
