I'll attach my nativeUpdaterLog.txt file. I don't know if any of my attempts to get MC working would have an impact on what it reports. Hopefully others will upload theirs as well.
I downloaded and reinstalled the Minecraft app but no change. I tried a third party Launcher and that works. Though it looks like all the Achievements are reset. I don't know where or how those are saved.
I have not reinstalled the Launcher. I’ve searched on how to do so but have not found any clear answers and ways to do so on a Mac. If there is an easy way to do so I’d be happy to do so given the proper method.
I have not deleted the .minecraft folder. Do you mean the actual minecraft folder? Do you mean re-install?
The Launcher does not show up in Activity Monitor
I have not tried to force quit the Launcher since there’s nothing to force quit
Here is a copy of the Console log when I try to open Minecraft:

@David. While it seems like you can install Java 17 without issue, the system doesn't recognize it. Checking in terminal (./java_home -V) I can see a list of different versions of Java installed. While java 17 was installed without error or issue it does not come up on the list of installed versions. Though version 16 does show up which wasn't installed prior and is of no real help in this circumstance.
I'm pretty certain you need macOS 10.12+
@John can you source that? I've had a very hard time actually finding the system requirements for Java 17. The 10.8+ requirement seems to be for Java 8.
As per Oracle : "Oracle does not certify on Operating System versions that are no longer supported by the Operating System provider. Older versions remain listed only for archival purposes."
I do not believe that El Capitan is still supported by Apple.
It would seem that unless Mojang/MS make some changes, if that's even something they can do, then it would not be possible to play MC 1.18 with a Mac that uses El Capitan (10.11) or older.
Same issue. Macbook Pro. macOS 10.11.6. MC 1.18. No crash report created. Will look for the launcher log.
@Daniel In Terminal just type "java -version" and hit Enter. I've been trying to find clarification for what versions of macOS Java 17 supports. That is if it is actually a Java issue.
@John. I don't think this counts as a Launcher issue but something that affects the next step of loading the game itself. I too installed Java 17 and the installation went smoothly but when I check the Java version via Terminal it says I'm at version 16. I did the install twice just to confirm.
Yeah, I called it in MCL-19840 .
I had a strong feeling that they wouldn't support older systems but I wish that they'd have given us a heads up before hand. I'm not sure if there's a way to play older versions or at least a way to do so conveniently. While some who are more computer savvy and may have been able to see this coming there was no official notification from Mojang beforehand. It's sad and disappointing.
I have the same issue. macOS 10.11.6. Updated to MC 1.18 Click PLAY then the game crashes with an error code: 0.
I still can't play. The Launcher updated and I had the option to play. However, whenever I click PLAY I get "An unexpected issue occurred and the game has crashed. We're sorry for the inconvenience. Exit Code: 0"
This happens repeatedly even after restarting.
Mac. OS 10.11 2015 MacBook Pro. Game works fine using 3rd party launchers.
Same. I opened Minecraft and the Launcher updated. I hoped it would fix this issue but I still have the same problem.
Keep in mind that the next MC update, 1.18, is due to come out any time now. Most likely, older computers/OSs won't be supported with that update and they're probably just punting the Launcher "issue" until the next MC version drops. At which point they can say we're on unsupported platforms and the bug isn't a bug (which it probably isn't) and this will be closed. It's a way of culling and phasing out older, out of date systems.
It's just my guess though. I'd wish at least that MS came out with a Launcher that at least let people to continue to play older versions of the game but I don't see that happening. I can still play the game using third party Launchers. I still meet the 1.17 system requirements and there's no real reason that couldn't continue.
My assumption is that this issue MCL-19840 isn't being worked on or resolved at all and just groundwork for the new requirements for 1.18 and onward. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
This issue has returned today, as I feared it would. i was playing this morning, took a break, and came back and reopened MC. The Launcher updated and I couldn't cancel it and sure enough: "Something went wrong in the login process". It's the same issue as :MCL-16269. I'm on an older Mac with an older OS that I can't update ate this point. Again, the game worked fine 15 minutes earlier. The issue is with the system reqs of the Launcher at this point. MC has always allowed players to play in older versions of the game and I understand that I probably wont meet the system requirements of 1.18 but I'd be just as happy playing 1.17 which works just fine on my current system and I see no reason to lock out people who have bought the game because of the Launcher and need to log in. I have a valid MS account. I can log in to MS through their own website. This issue isn't on my end and it's silly and short-sighted to purge paying users who can still currently play a version of the game.
E: Macbook Pro (Mid 2015). OS: 10.11.6 Has migrated MS account.
But...I currently meet the system requirements. So when the game gets updates to 1.18 I'll lose the ability to play an older version, like 1.17 that already works fine? Simply because the Launcher will have higher system requirements?
I'm having the same issue and I'm also on a Mac running 10.11.6. The game has been loading and playing fine until yesterday morning when the Launcher updated and I get the same problem, "something went wrong in the login process". I can understand the issue being caused by being on an older system but the game itself works fine. I've resigned myself to probably not being able to play the 1.18 update but up to the launcher issue the game itself has been playing fine. No changes to the computer were made on my end and I can access my MS account through the website.
Edit: I feel like the "solution" will just be "update your OS". Personally, I can't on this Mac for various reasons. And I we shouldn't have to update an entire OS just to be able to run the Launcher for a game that still runs perfectly well.
Still not fixed. Is it safe to assume that contrary to this Help Center article we will not "still be able to play older versions of Minecraft (1.17.1 and earlier)"?
