this is common for any game. a smaller window is essentially playing in a smaller resolution, which will obviously lead to better framerates because it's less intense on the gpu/cpu (depending on the game and how it renders graphics)
The new feature in 13w17a is that if zombies are hurt they "call" others to their aid. The zombies are getting hurt by the daylight, so they call upon more.

Happens for me too.
Works for me. Make sure to connect the hopper to the chest by shift-clicking the chest when holding the hopper.
