It appears to happen to all types of fences as well. And as roody415 said, it affects trapdoors too. And all types of trapdoors. It also seems to depend on the direction of the trapdoor. If you place a trapdoor facing east or west, it is dark as you said, but a trapdoor facing north or south is still dark but it's slightly lighter.
It appears to only happen with Husks, as I just tried this with regular zombies and did not get damaged. However when I spawned in Husks, I did get damaged.
The redstone signal is based on which book you interacted with last. So when you take the last book out of a chiseled bookshelf, it detects a redstone output of 1.
