This remains an issue in the newest snapshot.
This still occurs even in SSP. Horse lag makes them pretty much useless.
Interesting! I know that there is a broken Fisherman villager in the chunk I have problems with. I will try killing him. I know that the chunk duplicates mobs that were in the chunk in the previous state. I had a fletcher in that chunk, moved him, and now there's two of him. But when I moved one of my dogs into the chunk, the dog vanished upon reloading. So entities could be the source of the issue.
This is still occurring in the latest snapshots.
I have a potential cause, or at least a curious correlation. The chunk that I notice resetting in my SSP world happens to also be a slime chunk. Could someone else with this problem check and see if the affected chunks are slime-spawning chunks?
@Volki Craft: My Mojang account is migrated and I still have the problem. However, I'm sure it must be related to Mojang changing how the game recognizes players from usernames to UUIDs.
I have this issue as well. My dogs are also now hostile to me (I punched one to try and get it to stand up) so I think pets no longer consider the player as their owner.
For chickens, this is particularly tricky because I have a grinder that only drowns the chickens when they grow up, but thanks to the bad eye position the babies drown even when their heads are entirely out of the water (suspended above them).
This was not an issue in more recent versions as I have been attacked even though I killed the pigman in one hit. I still need to test this, but I would assume this would coincide with pigmen getting the zombie AI.
This issue has apparently come back in the latest snapshot?
Spiders turning on themselves is actually kind of cool. Like mantises eating each other when they're babies.
This is indeed because of Unbreaking. Tested multiple times. Only Unbreaking tools come back from the dead. It seems that tools that have one use left break before the game calculates if the use counts or is absorbed by the Unbreaking enchantment.

Blazes are seeing and firing at me through ANY block. While this IS part of the zombie AI, it doesn't make sense for Blazes since they should be smart enough to not shoot at something through an obstacle.
Does not occur when walking on a flat plane underwater, only going up or down.
There were reports that certain chunks were being deleted because of this patch. Since this issue is fixed on certain chunks, perhaps there is an issue with certain chunks?
Confirmed. Some item frames remain intact, though. I have some item frames in an area and, when loading the world, some started off 1 block in the positive X direction and shortly thereafter popped off. I have others in another chunk nearby that do not pop off. Both are placed on oak slabs.
Also interestingly, this happens every time I load the world, thus duplicating the items and the frames.
This needs to be fixed before the release. Perhaps NOT have the game recalculate everything in old chunks.
Confirmed in the newest snapshot. I believe this has to do with lighting. I got ~24 FPS in my base before 17a, after updating I got ~9 FPS. Setting smooth lighting off increases FPS slightly, but the only way to reliably increase the FPS is to lower rendering to 2 chunks so fewer chunks are being processed.
