it has been working correctly on and off latley. as of right now it is normal again. will post again in a few days.
IDK if this counts as part of this bug or if i should create a bug report, but 26.2 seems to be more laggy in general. i had to absolutely TANK my brother’s video settings for it to even be playable. older PCs seem especially affected.
Oh also this has been happening since at least 26.1

No my brother uses the Steve skin and it happens on his account too.
I believe that this is NOT a duplicate and that you have made a mistake. These two bugs are about DIFFERENT layers of rendering, thus two different issues. MC-307235 is about ITEMS in the inventory/hotbar. eg.
MC-307179 is about THE PLAYER MODEL in the inventory. eg.
While these bugs may be related, they ARE NOT duplicates. Thank you for your time.
to replicate go into 1.16.5 or before and sart a world. open it to lan. on another pc on the same lan join it. it will fail and say the servers are down for maintenance.
It wont let me login on my brother’s pc to our 1.14 lan world. says “failed to login authentication servers are down for maintenance”
