There’s a workaround for this issue that involves manually updating the version of Java 8 that Minecraft uses.
To do this, install a newer version of Java JRE 8 (for example from https://adoptium.net/temurin/releases?version=8), open your launcher and click on "Installations", edit the installation you are playing, then click “More Options” and “Browse” next to "Java Executable". Now locate your new Java installation. By default, this is C:\Program Files\Eclipse Adoptium\jre-8.0.462.8-hotspot\bin. In the bin folder, choose javaw or javaw.exe, then save your edits and try joining a server.

When logging into a 1.12.2 Minecraft server using Microsoft’s authentication services normally the server would load up on attempting to connect.
The actual result is giving failed to connect to authentication servers.
Normally this wouldn't cause concern but many other server owners are reporting it from servers 1.16 and earlier we of this morning.

Error message I get when I try to join is “Failed to log in: The authentication are currently down for maintenance.”
I have tried VPNing into where the server is hosted and joining from the local network and I cannot.
When trying to authenticate, nothing happens.
We are running curse forge modded server, and other people can join just fine.
This is not only limited to 1.8.9 . This also happens to ALL VERSIONS up to 1.16.5 . Mods don’t matter , it’s an issue to connect to the servers , even personnal ones . This has been impacting a lot of people , i hope it’s gonna get fixed soon because no one can play servers under 1.16.5 because of that .
It wont let me login on my brother’s pc to our 1.14 lan world. says “failed to login authentication servers are down for maintenance”
to replicate go into 1.16.5 or before and sart a world. open it to lan. on another pc on the same lan join it. it will fail and say the servers are down for maintenance.

I myself developing TeaClient a Minecraft Modpack/Client whatever you like say, I experience this issue myself while developing, note this is unaffiliated with mojang. There indeed is Issues with skin and connecting servers, I am actively keeping my users updated.
However it does effect those under <1.16.5 with connection issues and some later versions with skins on later versions. From reading this is the issue with java version that your using that doesn’t accept the new certificates (TLS) so easy fix is use a later version of java that supports the new certificates or use curseforge/minecraft launcher.
The launcher should’ve updated from 8u51 years ago anyways… Mojang, just use 8u461, why was it never updated anyways!?
This issue breaks online access for all legacy versions, which many players and modders still use. The Java 8 workaround helps, but it’s not a long-term fix. Please ensure proper authentication support is restored for older versions.
hypixel is having those issues too, i do can log in but my skin wont load
