Attack ranges for certain mobs are incorrect

Attack ranges for the mobs in this list may be incorrect:

  • Cave spiders (Exactly 1 1/2 blocks off, completely impossible to attack in melee without being hit in almost all cases! This may be caused because a cave spider could attack the same distance as a regular spider while having a smaller size)

  • Spiders (About 1 block off)

  • Silverfish and endermites (About 1/2 a block off)

  • Large slimes and large magma cubes (about 1 block off -

  • )

  • Polar bears (Correct range, but they attempt to attack from too far)

  • Baby polar bear (Attack range is way too high when hunting foxes; same problem as cave spider)

  • Foxes (About 1/2 block off)

  • Bees (About 1/2 block off)

  • Pandas (About 1 block off)

  • Dolphins (About 1 1/2 blocks off. Their attacks can be evaded if you fight them while sprint swimming or if you attack them at face level.)

  • Ender dragons (Attack range varies. Don't know if this is a bug because it may be the wings that cause the damage and knockback.)

  • Pufferfish (About 1 block off. Works as intended: MC-126163)

  • Killer bunny (Unsupported mob that has the same attack range problem as cave spiders and baby polar bears. See MC-93038)

Use the shield to block attacks from these mobs and see how far they bump into the shield. If they bounce from the shield farther than they probably should, this may be a bug because all the other mobs have relatively correct attack ranges.

This is closely related to MC-2310, but not the same issue. This report here is about attack ranges for certain specific mobs being incorrect. MC-2310 is about the general detection whether a mob should be able to deal damage being incorrect.

This issue relates to MC-2310.

Updated the report: Mobs like the cave spider, large versions of the magma cube and slime, and spider (due to the ability to attack you 2 blocks upward) have such a large attack range, you are very likely to be incapable of avoiding the damage in order to kill them. The other mobs on this list don't have a super game breaking attack range, but are still quite glitchy and can be slightly annoying. Some of the less extreme ones may be intended due to the resolution of MC-126163.

I mean seriously, how are you supposed to kill a cave spider with a sword without being hit by it's telekinetic bites!?

Edited to include the "Illager Beast" and I also made the measurements of the extra attack radius more precise. (By affecting mobs with slowness 5 and slowly walking towards them to see their actual attack radius)

I discovered this problem thru the cave spider, it feels like it can attack you from as far away as normal sized spiders can, even though cave spiders are smaller. Maybe they share the same distance from how far away they can hurt you?

"Vindicator riding ravager" is not a bug, because a hostile mob riding other hostile mob will increase the attack range (e.g if the zombie riding other zombie, the zombie riding other zombie will increase the attack range), to allow the passenger attack the target.

Illagers riding ravagers and vindicator riding ravagers will have aditional attack range also to making illagers can pick up ominous banner while riding the ravagers on raids.

Later three part are Intended, but other are not.

Relates to MC-173050.

Fixed for hoglins.

Would this relate to MC-2310? Or is this a duplicate of it?

marcono1234

I would say they are only related, but not duplicates. I have added a paragraph to the description explaining the differences, hopefully it is useful.

Adrian Östergård

This isn't a bug. We may re-evaluate the ranges in the future.

Is it likely that a related issue, MC-2310, will fix or at least significantly improve the problem with mobs like cave spiders attacking you from a few zipcodes blocks away, that makes it seem like it has the attack radius of a normal spider which is much larger?
