When placing a ladder in a single empty cell with all adjacent cells containing blocks, the cell becomes unnaturally dark. The dark area does not seem to occur if there is another empty cell beside the placed ladder. The dark area seems quite inconsistent with the way environments are naturally lit up. I can duplicate the bug by simply digging a short way into some rock, digging a single block directly above my character and then placing a ladder in to it. It only seems to occur for cells directly above the character. I have attached some images to illustrate (the second image is after I dug the adjacent block, after which the cell returned to normal).

Occuring for me every time (when described conditions apply: air block surrounded by opaque blocks from all sides except bottom, and ladder placed). 1.4.2, Mac OS 10.8.2, java 1.6.0_37.
Additional blocks that React like ladders: Signs, Fences, Gates, Trapdoors, Hoppers, Levers, Wood Button, Stone Button, Tripwire Hook, Iron Doors (if placed with block below it), Wood Doors, Iron Bars, Glass Panes, Anvils (only seen if torch supports the anvil), Vines, All head/skulls, Enchanting tables and Tilled Soil and End Portal Frames (if slabs are used for walls), All Slabs, All Stairs, both types of Cobble Stone Walls.
Also if you place one of the listed items: ( flower pot, Redstone, Redstone Repeater, Redstone Comparator, All Rails, All Pressure Plates (weighted too), ) in a inclosed room, then break the supporting block it will be visibly dark for a millisecond or 5.
Oddly this does not effect carpets in 13w19a
Thanks for reading, good luck.

Can confirm. No doubt will be looked at in the lighting rewrite.
