Iron golems spawning at an alarming rate

Possible cause

Iron golems check only a range of 9 blocks before it tries spawning a new one

After an hour of updating to 19w11a, my village (which previously had two golems) now has nine.

Can confirm. After updating to 19w11a from 19w09a there were around 12 iron golems around my villager breeder after 1.5h of play. In 19w09a iron golems never spawned there.

Also that breeder has 6 doors, I think iron golems are not supposed to spawn in such a small "village".

19w11a changed village mechanics. If 10 villagers "gossip" about iron golems and reach a level of 100, they spawn a iron golem. Doors are no longer needed for a village to exist

I can confirm this bug in 19w12b in a World converted from 1.13.2 via 19w07a. Meanwhile there are 50+ Iron Golems (see my both pics) and from my villagers 2/3 are dead. The dead fo villagers I only can confirm always are in a hug group of Iron Golems. I can't say what happend there in the group.

I can confirm as well for 19w13b. They are like rats in my village and it forces me to set up golem traps around the village just to keep the numbers down.

In my created village I have a total of 12 villagers and 6 golems, and another one spawns every MC day or two. Seems like there is no gossip check as to whether an iron golem is already present, cuz nobody needs this many golems trampling around the village at the same time!

Can confirm this (for me massive) problem in 19w14a. Meanwhile I guess more than 100 iron golems in my town... The game get extremely laggy!

This does not appear to be fixed in 1.14 pre-1.  I have almost as many golems as villagers.  This tends to make the game almost unplayable.

Definitely still not fixed in 1.14 pre-1. Village has 5 golems, 20 villagers, spawned 4 more the next day. This was after pruning the 200+ that spawned as an earlier snapshot. Going to hold off running this snapshot until resolved so I don't have to go through that again. XD

Problem seems to be that golems are tracked from only 9 blocks away. It should be higher.

I can confirm this for 1.14pre2, too... It's a old world from 1.13.2 converted via 19w07a and each snapshot after that.

The problem even exists in villages I wasn't after the village upgrade in 19w11a. In the big village of my world (see pics above) I set the three bells not directly in the center, but the golem spam mostly there and often in the houses near the center...

Yes, I'm still getting way too many iron golems in my village in 1.14 pre 2. I have a village that's half swamp and half plains. They're spawning way more in the swamp half.

EDIT to add:  I went to build a house, and they just kept spawning.  And spawning.  And now I'm having time lag because of so many golems.

This is a village I was in only once. I spawned next to it and left for a couple of days because I was not happy with that location. Return to it now and all these golems were already in here. Did not count how many but at least 20? The other village I live in has 3-4 of them which is an okay number I'd say because the village is huge.

I don't mind them spawning at a high rate, but for goodness sake can the villagers take into account the number of already spawned golems in the village during their 'gossip' sessions before they decide to make more?  I now have 3 golems for each villager with no end in sight.

I run a small private survival server, and I've had to go into the console and kill 200 golems (sometimes more sometimes less) to reduce lag and generally golems being a nuisance. In my picture, I killed 200 golems over 7 commands. Please fix this

The problem is not the spawning rate, which is very low. The problem is that the number of golem isn't capped, which mean that there will be an infinite number of golem if you play and stay around the village an infinite amount of time

I spend a significant amount of my time cleaning up golems in 1.14 pre-release 5. It is rather ridiculous how many spawn, I only have 9 villagers. If I go away for a  few hours, I will have a dozen golems at least.

Golems spawn waaay too fast and without limitations. They don't even need this new "gossip" mechanic they can spawn at night, when all my villagers sleeping. I also can't ignore them because they start to lag my game... this is getting annoying!

I'm having the same problem, I have at least 25 golems right now, and just to clarify I don't have 125 villagers, I have like 30. They're starting to cluster in one area, which is actually helpful so that I'm not constantly running into them. This is definitely still not resolved though because I had several spawn yesterday and today.

In my world (created under 1.13.2) I discovered a few new villages playing in 1.14. I noticed the following:

  • In the villages that have been created with the 1.14 (new generation of the chunks in previously undiscovered areas), I have no problem with Iron Golems there!

  • In three villages that have already been discovered in the 1.13.2 and have now been added with beds, jobs and bell, there are in the 1.14 I have still massive problems with the spawning of Iron Golems. (One big village with 4 bells, a middle-sized village with 1 bell and a small village with 1 bell).

My world is from 1.13.2 converted via 19w07a and each snapshot after that. In the big village I built traps to reduce the number of golems. Hundreds of Golems have been killed by these. After switching to version 1.14 I used the command /kill in LAN mode to kill all 458 golems there. Now, after just a few hours of play 1.14, there are nearly 100 golems again.

Just for my information: Why did you close this old post with all the user information, all the pics and all the followers for a post with nothing of them ❓ It looks from the beginning to the end like exact the same problem... Just wondering a bit.

Because the characteristics of the issue might have changed after the fix attempt, and the old ticket (this ticket) contains mostly only information about the old issue. Thich might cause confusion in the future, especially when the bug is to be fixed (again). We don't know yet whether the new issue is exactly the same issue as before, or just seems like it's the same. Hence it's safer to make a new ticket instead of reopening the old one.

If you have any further information about the issue that is still valid in 1.14, feel free to add it to the new report.

Hello, there are a lot of of Iron Golems spawning in my village on my local server, which runs on 1.14, which is apparently the version containing the bugfix. The server runs without any mods and the client only uses OptiFine with the SEUS shaderpack and a different resource pack.

I don't know if anyone sees this comment, but I found only pre-1.14 issues that are marked as resolved, that's why I decided to comment here.

Iron Golems have been overrunning my spawn village for some time. At one point there were 200 iron golems in the village all of which I had to attach to the perimeter wall to allow the 33 villagers access to buildings. This was after I killed a large number of the golems on two occasions. The village is walled so perceived threats by villagers are difficult to imagine. At present I allow six golems in the village and place all new spawning golems outside the walls to attack mobs and eventually be killed by them. I tried planting tall grass everywhere inside the village (even on rooftops) and broke every door in the village but nothing slows the spawning. It is very sad that I cannot find any solution other than to put them out to die. Can you help me stop the spawning?

Currently running version 1.16.1. No mods.

Would someone please look at the attached photo of naturally spawned Iron Golems from the village behind the walls and explain how this number is "behavior that is working as intended and not a bug". As I stated in my earlier comment, I remove newly spawned golems from the village and place them outside the walls so as not to congest village life (seven golems remain in the village for protection). The sheer number of spawning golems is staggering. You might compare the current photo with the one from my earlier comment above. I need help with this.

Since 1.16.1 I face this problem again. Villages make DOZENS os golems now, even smaller controll groups of 4 villagers make them. I now have to kill them or my game slows down way

I was playing in 20w51a and very quickly had nine iron golems spawn in my village which only has 12 villagers in less than three hours. Is this normal/intentional? It has a maximum capacity of 13 villagers but one of the villagers died. I have it fenced off and lit up so no other mobs can spawn or get into the village except for the iron golems and villagers themselves and some animals I brought in, so the villagers should be "seeing" the iron golems. I have a killing room where I drop them onto magma blocks because nine is a little excessive, and I already have ~a half-stack of iron blocks from killing them.

Edit: There were nine at one time before I started killing them.
