I have an underground sorter system. It is not visible from anywhere above ground. I have about 40 fps when playing, but as soon as I look into the direction of the sorter system my fps drops to 10 and stays there until I look away.
I might want to add that not a single graphics setting could change that fact.

So, I deleted absolutely everything from my world except for the sorter system which contains the huge amounts of hoppers. I returned everything back to natural terrain, then set everything around the sorter system to air. My general FPS increased quite a lot, but the problem is still there. Looking away from the hoppers gets me 75 FPS. Simply turning around will drop the FPS down to 25.
I'll attach screenshots, the crash report and the zipped world now.

Confirmed.
To reproduce it's enough to look in the direction of the sorter, regardless if the sorter is visible or hidden behind a hill.
Yes. As I said it does not matter if it's visible or not. I just removed everything else to make sure it's actually from the hoppers and nothing is interfering. Also the screenshots have been taken in 1.5.2, so I will add that version too.
I just verified that the hoppers cause this. I made a superflat world with nothing but a huge block of hoppers. Looking away gives me 125 FPS. Turning around and looking at the block gives me 16 FPS. Ill upload the world right away for anyone who wants to test it too.

Also confirmed for test world.

That reminds me of MC-5534 where also a log of non-cubic, transparent blocks are involved.

... and MC-7895
They seem connected. The interesting part with hoppers though is that it only causes lag while looking into their direction. That makes absolutely no sense. With Fences it's because they have a lot of sides to render I think and it also causes lag when looking away.
Any updates on this? Anything from Mojang? It ruins the game for me 😞

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
This is still an issue as well in the current version of the patch. I notice a detectable drop in FPS when looking at my hoppers in my creative world. Please fix asap.
Still an issue as of this post date.
Still an issue as of post date, using 1.7.2.
I still have this issue in 1.7.4.
Tested with the Hopper Lag world that is attached, FPS drop from 50 to 8 on my laptop.
The Pie Chart in the Shift + F3 screen does not change significantly between looking at the hoppers and not looking at the hoppers.
Probably relates to the issue where looking towards many chests would cause lag (I think Optifine helped the lag; it then only occurred when the chests were actually visible)
Yes, this still applies to the latest version of Minecraft (1.8.1), and the Launcher (1.5.3).

Reopened, thanks.

Relates to MC-1138
Likely affects version 1.11.2 as MC-1138
Confirmed for 18w31a

Does anyone still experience this in 1.14.3 pre-2? I just did some testing and I'm not seeing any noticeable FPS drop while looking into the direction of 47k hoppers.
this still happens in 20w27a?
Hi there!
Is this still an issue with any of the latest releases? If so, please add a comment or update the affected versions.
Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report,
Can you zip and attach the world (or the relevant part of it) ?
