Well, I've presented a very small, easy to repro and self-contained repro, with 2 gifs attatched. Possibly the change was not announced? In 1.13.2 you can see the chicken survive the lava blade and take fire damage, in 1.14-1.14.1 it dies instantly.
How else should I modify this report?
Perhaps MC-151418 is the issue here?
The redstone here pops the lava for the same amount of time. As you probably know, dispensers need two pulses, one to put out lava, and one to withdraw it.
I could do the same setup without observers (using just a button twice), but it's lest controlled.
So you could repro this difference with just a button, its just the timing is much more controlled with redstone instead of human button clicking.
Here lava is there for just as long, but the chicken dies immediately in one, and not in the other./
Really worth to take a look at the gifs side-by-side.
The gifs are so laggy it's really hard to see how many frames it took on each one. Since MC-151418 was fixed, can you check if this is still an issue in the 1.14.2 prerelease out today?
tx Camron! If we could set an animal on fire before dealing damage, i would guess it can fix it. otherwise i guess chicken/lava farms are dead forever
I redesigned the farm to use flint and steel. Here's my post on Reddit explaining my findings and how I did the work-around.
It's not a detailed blueprint for the farm, but it explains the functionality of it. A little more expensive/complicated to build, but it has the exact same output and works as well as the old lava ones used to.
i turned it into a suffocation dmg farm, so the chickens are not cooked, but at least the little ones are spared ... :/
That's an easier change to the existing design than mine. I added a hopper clock to mine so it only activates flint and steel and throws new eggs once every 30 minutes. That ensures all chickens are fully grown. It's roughly twice the size of the old lava-style farm and at least twice the complexity. Anyway, try to spread that word that this in't a bug, it's actually working as intended now lol. Kinda sad, but we'll adapt.

Neither chicken health nor lava damage changed between 1.13.2 and 1.14. Please find the actual cause of whatever issue you are having rather than guessing, or this report must be considered incomplete.
