When exploring near a tropical ocean i noticed shoals of fish jumpin around near/on the surface of the water.

What I expected to happen was: The fish would stay underwater, and never reach the surface.

What I saw: the fish would come to the surface and be visible above the water.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Find a tropical ocean full of tropical fish

  2. Wait for one to come to the surface

  3. Notice that it comes above the water

With the screenshots you've provided, the fish aren't fully coming out of water. They occasionally come above the surface and I don't see how this is a problem.

They sometimes jump out of the water completely causing them to rotate sideways. I have seen this occur with salmon although I presumed it was intended because that's what salmon do. However I have no source and if it happens with tropical fish too I doubt it is intended. I definitely think fish turning sideways when jumping out of the water is a bug though.

I was able to reproduce with some tropical fish swimming towards a source block of water up a block

Can confirm in 1.17.1. This causes fish to constantly kill themselves if they're in a small pond for example, because they don't pathfind back to water.

The issue seems to stem from fish having insane upwards acceleration and top speed.
