When breaking a block under the candles they are not destroyed, but float.
You can also place the candles on top of each other and also next to each other with no block underneath them.

While I can understand that this seems like a bug and is inconsistent with similar blocks, it's such a useful "feature", it'd be a shame to see it fixed.
Probably a feature request, since MC-178791 was a feature request.
So... what's the bug? A lot of blocks in Minecraft don't need supporting blocks. (for example flower pots, end rods, daylight sensors, etc.) Why should candles be any different?
When I saw this "bug" I instantly thought that you can finally build a magical castle with floating candles. Would be cool, but obviously it is an inconsistency with other such blocks... Maybe make them placable on string then at least. That would give the builders a workaround, but be consistent otherwise.
