Squids and glow squids stop moving if player is a little far from them

From a certain distance of blocks, squids become frozen in the same place, until the player approaches, releasing them.

To reproduce

  1. Be near a squid and a glow squid

  2. Switch into Spectator mode

  3. Wait for a bit
→ ❌ The squids stop moving

  4. Switch back into Creative
→ The squids start moving again

  5. Go further away from the squids
→ ❌ The squids stop moving at some point, as opposed to other animals

I think all mobs do this which is likely intentional but glow squids (and normal squids) seem to do it noticeably closer than other mobs.

I've reopened this since MC-182763 is still different – fish simply stop moving altogether, even if the player is nearby. In this case, squid only stop moving if no player is nearby.

The dolphin is also affected, isn't it?

I'm starting to think that this is intended. I tested this with fish (obviously), dolphins, guardians, elder guardians, drowned, sheep, cows, chicken and pigs, and many more, and they also seem to freeze (only rotating around and bobbing their heads sometimes) when I switch from creative to spectator mode. Perhaps I misinterpreted this ticket in the first place, so only staying perfectly still is the issue?

I have created MC-227635 for the issue I described in my comment.

Can confirm in 21w39a but based on the resolution of MC-46843 and MC-47533, this is probably working as intended.

Orbic

Still in 1.18. pre-1. I don't believe this was intended as the range squids and glow squids stop moving at is very noticeably close to the player, and it definitely didn't used to be this close. It's especially noticeable with glow squids because of their fullbright properties.
