MC-219843

Mycelium's side texture differs from other dirt-based blocks

The Bug

Mycelium blocks use a different dirt texture on the side than all other dirt based blocks.

MC-1483 was said to be fixed in this snapshot, but mycelium is still subject to it.

How To Reproduce:

  1. Prepare a block of mycelium such that its side faces are clearly visible

  2. Place a snow layer block on the top of this block, keeping a close eye on the general bottom right region of its side face

  3. Note the texture changes which should not be

  4. Remove the snow layer

  5. Equip a shovel, paying attention to that same region of pixels

  6. Transform the mycelium into a grass path by the defined key

  7. Note that this also causes the pixels in question to change when they shouldn't

  8. Repeat these tests, substituting the mycelium for either grass paths or podzol

  9. Note the complete lack of randomly rearranging pixels in all cases

It also applies for the mycelium grass texture, as the snow side texture is the same for the 3 blocks (grass block, podzol and mycelium), but mycelium has a very different side texture.

The grass-like texture is longer than the other grassy blocks, don't forget that.

I see why this ticket has sit in the backlog since 2013. One can argue that frost actually does change dirt texture and color, if you ever grew up in the north you know this.  Anyways outside of that, as a resource pack developer who has been working on a photo realistic pack for many years now which is behind since every snapshot puts me further behind because of file renaming and additional textures, and models keep coming.  I suggest instead of adding a new special texture for mycelium snow, you just make the mycelium grass side texture match the other dirt textures, yet keeping the top as is. That way you create no new textures to further break texture packs and get this ticket resolved.

Remember that mycelium is a unique variant of grass, and resource packs can be updated/modified easily, unlike data packs. Any person can make a custom texture, upload it somewhere, and share it to people, and then people can add it to their resource packs.

I don't see your argument as a problem, because there is a lot of people who makes resource packs, and even if one gets outdated other people can fix the problem and share their updated versions.
