Since 1.13 there is a bug, where you cannot hear sound of the game in some channels if you are turned only one way (left or right) to the source. You can hear the sound only at one side and it is very irritating and unnatural. I'm not some audio expert, but I think, that if you had only one ear and you turn the way that your only ear is on one side of the head, with the source being on the other side of the head, you would hear it.
In past versions of Minecraft (in 1.12 and below) the sound system worked pretty good and it was great.
The following image visually shows the channels (1.8 in the left, 1.16 in the right):

Experimenting this since 1.13 as well. I always thought this was MC-121364 but seems like that one resulted to be describing a different issue? I believe this got like this after the LWJGL update, and since then it is now really annoying.
So... yeah, can confirm here.
Also, you should add a volume warning for the video.
This issue doesn't seem to be present when directional audio option is enabled (added in 22w11a), however i noticed the sound gets kind of muffled compared to the "classic" sound but that might be a different issue.
Yet still, hardware that doesn't support HRTF or people who don't want this option enabled will still notice this.
Have a look at the info I posted in MC-249275 , particularly the config file setup and settings link.
Probably worth playing about with these settings...
channels, stereo-mode, stereo-encoding, cf_level
Is it still broken when when turning on directional audio in music/sounds options?
And is the device correct? If you change the device, does it change anything?
Plausible based on provided comparison and analysis.
