In areas where the sky is not overhead, and even in areas completely boxed in with solid blocks (dirt, stone etc) it seems like it is at level 15 brightness, despite being at a lower brightness in the F3 menu.
The attached image is my character in survival, completely boxed in with solid blocks at level 0 light from block or sky. I tried placing torches to "reset" the light, but that did nothing. This is also not the first snapshot with this issue, but I am unsure which snapshot I was playing when I first encountered this.ย

Personally, I have seen this problem as well after I use a modded client with the "Fullbright" option and switch to vanilla. If this is your problem, you may slightly adjust your brightness, then exit out of the video settings menu and reset it to what you previously had. (apologies for the wordy and awkward response, hope it helped, thoughย ๐)
Are you sure you don't have night vision?
If not, try turning your brightness all the way down to Moody and then turn it back to your desired value.
If either of those fix the problem, please let us know so we can close the issue (well not me because I'm not a mod). If not, please indicate that you have done these steps and they did not work. Thanks!
@ype I mean, I did not know what version I was playing when I first encountered the bug because it was a few snapshots ago, but I don't know how many. But the problem was solved (see below)
@Codexe You're right, my bad! brain fart, lol. Also... that did fix the problem! :flushed: I did have a cheat client on for 2b2t a few months ago, I didn't realize that it could impact it like that, especially since it persisted between sessions and worlds and single vs multiplayer. Hopefully at least this helps someone who is searching up the issue in the future since I couldn't find anyone talking about it. Also your response is fine, it helped! (Note: I added the screenshot before trying this solution)
@Brevort No night vision, but the steps did help ass mentioned above.
I'm guessing your gamma value was set to >1.0 which will cause this issue and can be solved in that way.
Resolving as invalid as OP solved issue. For further help please visit community support.

If you are unsure of what version you are running, you can open the launcher and it will say in the bottom right. Besides that, I couldn't replicate this bug, when I played on 21w15a (the reported version).
