'Who Needs Rockets?' Advancement is granted incorrectly

The Advancement description says “Use a Wind Charge to launch yourself upward 8 blocks”, but grants when the player descends after the vertical distance was travelled by any means. It also gives to the player for travelling slightly over seven blocks, not the eight blocks stated.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Enter flight mode in Creative

  2. Teleport self to the same Y co-ordinate as if standing on the floor (In Superflat this is Y=-60)

  3. Throw a Wind Charge at your feet

  4. Run the following command: /tp @s ~ ~7.07839999 ~

  5. Enter Survival Mode to begin falling (Descending)

Observed Results:

‘Who Needs Rockets?’ is granted when the player descends after reaching a Y-value seven blocks above their starting point in any way.

Expected Results:

‘Who Needs Rockets?’ is granted when the player has launched themselves upwards eight blocks, specifically only covering this distance with the Wind Charge

This could technically count as two bugs, one for the distance being wrong and the other for the tracking method being too unspecific, I’m not sure.

I also found MC-270656 which covers one specific unintened method of “launching” yourself upward, but any (or at least almost any) unintended method where the player doesn’t touch the ground/a mount first has this problem. (Such as teleportation in my above example, Creative Flight from the other report, or by Bubble Column, etc.)

It is best to track this behavior in MC-270656. When I have time I will amend that report to better reflect the real scope of the issue.

Why would it be best to copy everything over to that report? All of the information is here already, and in the past older less accurate reports have been marked as duplicates in favour of marking the newer, more detailed report, presumably to avoid unnecessarily spending time copying stuff over. (I'm just confused)

In this instance it was not tricky to update MC-270656, and more importantly that report has already been triaged (and is being tracked in ADO) so it would have been necessary both to inform Mojang of the closure and to wait for them to re-triage the new report.

That said, the height being >7 blocks instead of >=8 blocks seems like a valid issue, and one caused by the “fix” for MC-269649. I will create a new report about that (edit: made MC-304935).

First part makes sense, thank you for explaining. Is there a way I can see on a bug report if it is already actively known by Mojang?

Also on your original report title, I suggest changing it to something broader to better fit what happens, as it seems to occur for every vertical travel method where the players movement isn't interrupted, not just the two listed. (Such as Bubble Columns, Elytra seem to have the same issue too, and I'd assume Ender Pearls would be in the same boat as teleportation, but clarifying the uninterrupted movement part because this doesn't work on Twisting Vines, and presumably other vines + ladders)

If you want to see whether the issue is being tracked in ADO, view it in mojira.dev, eg MC-270656. And I’ve edited the title and description to be more all-encompassing.
