Overworld and menu background music is skewed towards the newest 26.2 tracks

The balance of the background music in the game has been altered more than just adding the five new background tracks in a way that appears to be an oversight. This isn’t meant to be a complaint against the new music, just an issue with how it is weighted relative to all previously added music.

  1. All fingerspit tracks have been given a weight of 2. Given nearly every Overworld biome music pool has around 2 new tracks, this skews the fingerspit tracks to the point of being as frequent as C418’s music, despite there being many more C418 tracks.

  2. All non-fingerspit Overworld tracks that had higher weightings have been reduced to a weight of 1. Some examples include:

    1. Eld Unknown in Dripstone Caves

    2. Featherfall in Flower Forest

    3. Broken Clocks in Forest

    4. Bromeliad in Jungle

    5. All non-Wild Update tracks in Old Growth Taiga

Attached below are images of the difference between sounds.json in 26.2-snap-6 and 26.2-snap-7. If this is an intentional change (e.g. new music will be more heavily weighted moving forwards), an acknowledgement of that new status quo would be appreciated.

I’ve been hearing the same handful of tracks now, and I’ve been playing for hours a day.

Compared to the variety that 1.19/20/21 had, this feels incredibly mundane and actively makes me want to stop playing, I hope this decision is reversed

:/

Voting this, I hope they fix it.

Finally made an account here. I really hope this is sorted so we’re not stuck with terrible music balance for the next full year.

May we be given an explanation as to why this is considered acceptable? It feels incredibly repetitive and actively goes out of its way to make the game feel more mundane, opposed to just. Using the old music weights. As the charts from tryashtar show, the disparity is massive and this cannot be considered a minor issue. Alongside creative music straight up not being in the biome’s environments attributes and not playing as well as deep oceans missing underwater music, this game’s music variety (and by extension, enjoyment of many players) has plummeted. If the intent is to promote the new artist, isn’t the main menu enough? Let alone getting in a massive game to begin with?

This has to be an elaborate joke on Mojang’s side.

A few days ago, I heard a piece of music I'd practically never heard before, but when I looked it up, it turned out to be from the 1.18 soundtrack. Sometimes I feel like these tracks have an even lower chance of playing than C418's tracks.

You’re actually very right about that, Shimamura, 1.18 music is easily the rarest in the game and updates like this only make it worse, which is such a shame.

My final take on this.

  • Music weighting should probably just be removed at this point

  • Although it would require rewriting, the last few tracks played shouldn’t be able to play again.

  • This isn’t really anything devs have control over of course, but we should probably have 2 artists a year like Caves & Cliffs to ease repetition if weighting will remain skewed each update.
