[MC-45537] Cannot place buttons under stairs or slabs, or ontop of upside down stairs or slabs

What I expected to happen was...:
place a button under some sandstone stairs

What actually happened was...:
wouldn't let me

Steps to Reproduce:
1. get button
2. place button on bottom of stairs upside down
3. magic

You can't place a button on any side of those blocks - they will not transmit redstone signals anyway.

Reopening due to the fact that You can place levers etc. on top of slabs, yet those transmit no Redstone.

There is a mistake, buttons couldn't be placed horizontally before 1.8.

Confirmed for 1.8-pre1. Also, please update the bug description to include being unable to place levers under stairs or slabs. Also, possibly relates to MC-59360.

Only on top for now. Buttons behave now like levers.

This is not fixed, neither WAI. If it can stay on top, why not on sides/bottom?
