This bug shares the same problem with MC-525, but I am reporting this because it does not only affects Pvp.
Swords and tools lose durability without dealing any damage when used to hit mobs.
This happens when:
-Any mob is hit while in its invulnerable state (mob's model is red).
-Any dying mob (0 hp and have their model turned sideway) is hit. Their invisible hitbox still take the durability of your weapon.
-An Enderman is hit and teleports without taking damage.
To reproduce, try spamming hits on a few zombies with a wooden sword. The sword would break on the third or fourth zombie you use.
Another way to reproduce this is to fight an Enderman, a fresh sword for every hit. You may notice it teleporting without taking damage.
Weapons and tools should only loses durability in combat when they deal damage. For example a wooden sword with 60 uses SHOULD deal damage 60 times, not having half of them going to waste. This may not be a bug, but it is certainly a major annoyance.

I can confirm that too. It is really annoying and also it is really difficult to face mobs (especially the 1.6 ones which are harder) without spaming the left click button to hit them rather than* waiting a bit so you know that this will not happen. I am in 1.6.2
*please tell me if rather than is correct, if not tell me what should I have said there so the sentence would be correct. 🙂

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.8.1 Prerelease 3 / Launcher version 1.5.3 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Is this still an issue in 1.9 or 1.9.1-pre3?

This is still an issue even in the latest Bedrock version 1.2.3. This needs to be taken out of "resolved" status.

I'm unable to reproduce this issue in 1.17.1. Upon attacking a player that's in creative mode, weapons did not appear to consume durability. I've provided some attachments that demonstrate that this behavior no longer occurs.
