When I build a mob-grinder shaft cutting through a floor, and the shaft doesn't include the corner columns, a monster sometimes falls through the corner and lands on the floor, even though there's no width for it to fall through. This means it must be able to fall through just a vertical line with no width, and I'm pretty sure that's wrong. NB: So far I haven't seen this happen with a mob that survived the fall.

I think this is what the original poster is trying to describe. Shaft on the right would be the one that works, the one on the left would be the one without corners that mobs glitch out of.
Adrian is correct, although the shafts I've been trying are 2x2 rather than 1x1 inside. I'm attaching a screenshot that shows, with potions, examples of where the glitch mobs' loot drops if they still die by falling.
On the off chance this makes a difference: The bottom face of the shaft I've observed this in is jagged and consists of 4 hopper intakes, all connected to a double chest. 2 columns have the hopper sitting on and connecting to the top of the chest; the other 2 have the hoppers 1 level lower and connecting horizontally to the back of the double chest. The spawn room is right above my bed, and survives the minimum-distance-from-player-spawn-point check by dint of the y-coordinate (it's at y=76 and my bed's at y=51). Crude, yes, but resource-efficient and worth rerouting all my stairways around, if bugs like this weren't lowering the yield and increasing the collateral damage.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases. If this has been done, we can reopen the issue.

Could you include a screenshot with the setup?
