When I open my Minecraft launcher, it says "Failed to load URL mojang://launcher/index.html with error ERR_FAILED (-2)."

Minecraft never had a problem for the 8 months I've had it until now. I was saying goodbye to my friends and left my computer (with its screen on) in my room. This isn't your problem, but for some reason, my computer restarts if I goes AFK for too long and restarts without warning. When I came back to my restarted computer, I thought "Ugh, another restart. Guess I'll have to relaunch Minecraft." (Minecraft was open when my computer restarted.) So I logged back into my computer and opened Minecraft's launcher. (My computer was still opening my tabs on Google Chrome and was still laggy from all that.) A bar showed up saying "Updating launcher bootstrap," and I thought "Huh, Minecraft 1.14.3 came out. Cool." I waited about five minutes and the bar opened up something that said "Minecraft Launcher was unable to open" or something like that, so I pressed the Okay button and tried again, and again, and with a new message, it said "Failed to load URL mojang://launcher/index.html with error ERR_FAILED (-2)" I then was like "Well crap, I guess I'll need to restart my computer again." So I did, and still happened. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it with failure to come and now I'm here, clueless of how to assert this situation, so I am now handing it off to the programmers. Please fix this issue I need to play this game daily.

Sincerely,

GameCrusher218

Please attach the launcher_log.txt file from your minecraft folder here. If you have trouble finding your minecraft folder, follow this guide: Click me

Just loaded it up today and a new launcher appeared. I found out that Minecraft got a new launcher so everything works now. Thanks!

Reopened as two other users are having the same issue.

I have tried almost everything. Delete all the files and tried to redownload but I still get the same error. I am at a loss.

I did some digging and it is saying I am using Version 451 (1) for the minecraft launcher, is that the correct one I should be using?

I am now able to launch minecraft. When I click "PLAY" minecraft crashes.  It will not let me view the error message.

Hi! Can you please try that again with the new Launcher version that released today, and attach a new launcher_log.txt file?

@unknown, your issue is entirely unrelated to this ticket. Please create a new ticket if the issue persists.

A few weeks ago I had noticed Minecraft accidentally duplicated itself, and I deleted one of the two but then the launcher would only say the error message, same as the poster here. I've tried deleting all the files and redownloading Minecraft over and over again. When I use "Show Package Contents" on the Minecraft app downloaded from the dmg there's no file called "launcher_log.txt", but there is one under the Minecraft>MacOS file called "Launcher" and the message for when I try to log in is

[0308/184055.650047:WARNING:url_request_job_manager.cc(90)] Failed to map: mojang://launcher/index.html

since deleting Minecraft doesn't work I suspect there is something still on my computer that is corrupting it or it may be an issue with my version. I still have High Sierra and have not updated to Catalina, if that information helps.
If there's anything else I need to provide or anything else I can do please tell me.

Update: I updated my computer and was finally able to find the minecraft folder that contained the actual game data. For some reason I couldn't locate it when searching minecraft before but it worked now. Deleted it and redownloaded the game and now it works smoothly. Hope this helps anyone with this issue

Closing as "incomplete" as the issue is very old, and there appears to be multiple issues reported. Create a new bug if there's similar issues in the future.
