[MCPE-14417] Cannot Type Text After Left Clicking Mouse (Break / Attack)

Affects Windows 10 Edition PC

In 0.14.3 there is a bug where left clicking (breaking blocks / attack) will not allow Typing, including Signs, in chat, or in the Anvil gui.

The cursor shows, but no characters can be written. The rest of the keyboard works ('Esc' to exit sign gui, and then 'WASD' for movement etc)

Steps To Reproduce

Left Click to attack/break
Text cannot be entered now on signs, chat, anvil or main menu, unless TAB is pressed or the game is exited and restarted.

Temporary Workarounds
Press Tab to get typing back
Or, if your Win10 device has touch screen input, tap the screen

Does not affect players connected via LAN, just the Windows 10 Edition host.

Sorry @unknown, I cannot reproduce on 0.14.3 survival or creative single player on the following devices:

Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920W8), Android 5.1.1
Asus B121 Tablet touch & pen enabled, Win10 Pro (64-bit) v1511 b10586.318 (bluetooth keyboard)
Apple iPad3 (MC705C/A) iOS 9.3.1 (13E238)

To test, I created a new survival world, built a crafting table, then 3 signs. Placed a sign and typed some text (no formatting used, sometimes one line some times 2). I broke that sign, placed another and tried typing it worked fine. Next I found a cow, made an item frame, placed and broke it, placed a sign and I could again type fine.

Can you reproduce consistently in a new world? If so, we're missing some conditions for this bug.

I included Windows 10 PC as the affected device, perhaps it is peculiar to that?

I've found it consistently reproducible on new and old worlds on 0.14.3

Also cannot reproduce when the Win10 device is a survival game host and the iOS and Android are clients. Tried just with signs, didn't try item frames. Also tried where the first sign placed by any player was blank (i.e. adding no text before breaking). In no case could I reproduce the bug yet.

What is your win10 set up (or have you tried several of them)? What is the keyboard set up too?

Windows 10.0.10240 Build 10240 x64 based PC (Desktop) with standard ps/2 keyboard and usb mouse input (not touch).

Additionally, I tested this out with a wirelessly connected keyboard and mouse, bug still behaved in the same way.

Very odd. Can you reproduce it by:

restarting the game,
starting a new creative flat world, (no other players joining)
placing 1 block of dirt,
placing a sign on a side of that block,
typing one unformatted line of text e.g. "steve" on the sign and pressing escape on the keyboard,
breaking the sign,
placing a new sign in its place, and
trying to type on that sign?

Yep! That's pretty much what I had done anyway, but I just followed your steps exactly again, and could not type text after breaking the sign.

Please note, that breaking ANY block will break the text input into chat or on a sign.

I'm having the exact same issues using update 0.14.3 of the Win 10 beta on PC. It's not just when I break blocks though, even if I look up at the sky and left click, if I left click at all outside of the chat window or my inventory, I can no longer type. However, if I use the x key to do the breaking block command, I can still type, which suggests to me it's linked to the left click. Can you confirm?

I cannot reproduce on my win10 pro x64 PC that is not part of the beta/development builds of win10.

@unknown Why did you feel it necessary to edit the description? This bug is not reproducible by creating more signs. The text input gets disabled when you Left Click not when you create a second sign.

The text input bug also extends to the game menu when you exit a world, that is why you can't edit the world name, until you press TAB or exit the game and restart it. 🙂

Finally confirmed on my Asus B121 Tablet touch & pen enabled, BT keyboard, no mouse, Win10 Pro x64 10.0.10586 build 10586, but ONLY when I plugged in a mouse and left clicked at least once in game before trying to type, and even then if I touched the screen I could type again. Pressing Tab instead of touching the screen also brought text entry back.

Clearly a mouse left click input is causing the issue. This is being handled differently than a touch input since I cannot reproduce the issue without a mouse.

This is not a Win10 public vs. beta release issue.

I was about to report this bug! It happens on my All-In-One HP Pavilion 23. Chat works fine on MCPE. It's a Win10 only bug. Keyboard not broken, typed on notepad and this.

ITS 1.14.4 and the chat wont work no matter What for some reason its the first time in 1.14.4 EVER and ive played it since the start of 1.14.4 and Minecraft since 2013 i think so yeh its never happend AND it happend on singleplayer… SAY WUUUUUUT

@@unknown 1.14.4 is a Java version of the game, so you might want to head over to the Minecraft: Java Edition bug tracker project.

Please try the search feature there before creating a new ticket, as it's likely that the issue has been reported already.
