When making an old world type infinite, new caves do not generate below y-level 0 and world height remains at 256 instead of 320

When I got the 1.18 Minecraft update on my Nintendo Switch, I made a copy of a world, which was created with the Old world type, and I converted it to an infinite world to see how 1.18 generation would affect my world. However, once the world was converted to infinite, the new height limits were not applied to my world. In both previously loaded and unloaded chunks, caves were also not able to generate below y-level 0.

This is caused by the game not switching the baseGameVersion to * after the world has been converted, which keeps the converted world stuck with 1.17.40 generation.

This was mentioned in the changelog. Minecraft no longer updates old world types.

I have the exact same problem but in windows 10, it even happen when i create a new world

Same problem. Doesn’t take you to “World Update” screen before opening expanded world (it doesn’t ask for unexpanded ones either, but I’m pretty sure that’s on purpose), and expanding Old Type worlds to infinite on 1.18 make all new chunks 1.17 terrain, down to there even being “lakes” that were removed in 1.18. Height is also 0 to 255 like 1.17.

If you expand an Old Type world before 1.18 though (not sure if you have to open this expanded world in 1.17 first, haven’t checked), everything will be 1.18 terrain, even adding more depth and height to existing chunks. It also gives you the “World Update” screen before opening the Infinite version as usual. I hope this helps.

Seems like Old worlds remain version locked to 1.17.40 even when made Infinite in 1.18.

Same, but it’s not even an old world converted. It’s actually ibxtoycat’s let’s play world that’s locked in 1.17. I’ve been avoiding it ever since then.

Thank you for your report!
