Hostile mobs spawning in lit areas as high as light level 13

Render Distance: 5-8 (Changing constantly, depending on what I'm doing.)

Simulation Distance: 4

Dealing with some phantoms when I caught a glimpse of what I call a "freak spawn." AFAIK, Zombie Sieges are Java only, I believe.

Note the Zombies' brightness & the group dispersing in the video (both indicators of a fresh spawn).

Strays for some reason cannot jump out of any full block Top Snow/Snow Layer they spawned in. Whenever I catch the event, I will post images/videos of Strays being stuck in the snow as that is substantial evidence of this bug.

Edit, Tue. July 11, 2023: It happens quite rarely (about once every night, if you're lucky to witness it), so I can't guarantee this method of explaining would suffice, but here goes.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Be in a roofed area (i.e. caves, buildings, etc.) or wait until it's night.

  2. Stand in the center of about a 30 block radius of lit area.

  3. Wait for mobs to spawn, which should happen almost immediately.

Expected Results: Mobs should spawn according to the Caves & Cliffs rules. Passive mobs under skylight  with lit grass blocks, while hostiles should spawn only in light level ZERO.

Observed Results: Hostile mobs can sometimes spawn as close as 1-2 blocks away from light sources, rendering light sources virtually pointless (check the videos/images please).

Could be a Switch only bug. So please have someone with one test this. Thanks in advance.

Look at the center torch from 0:04 - 0:06

Again, note the mob's brightness & how there is no way the creeper could've been where it is in the span of 2 seconds. I apologize for the shield as I don't have totems as of this recording.

Was busy during the weekend, hence the 2 day difference between the file name & upload date.

Torches are placed on Snow Blocks to prevent Snow Layer "Blocks" from melting in a "+" format, hence why the Strays in the image are stuck in their spawn spot.

Here is a Stray that spawned on a Snow Block, on light level 13.

I have some suspicions about what is happening in the videos you've given. Can you clarify if all of these occurences are happening in a vanilla world, not on a marketplace template world and not on a realm or server owned by someone else who might be using packs or playing tricks?

I think the creeper example may be an illusion. There is an unlit area a few blocks away from where the creeper appears, and it seems to "spawn" while your shield is blocking your view of the spot. It is possible that it spawned in the dark area, or had spawned there on a previous visit and acquired persistence, and that it walked over or began to render just while your shield was blocking your view. It looks like the point where you start your riptide flight is just beyond the entity render distance (the lesser of 72 blocks or simulation distance) of the area where the creeper seems to appear.

The stray example may be due to the full blocks of snow layers blocking light but allowing spawns inside of them. So the strays actually on the blocks below the snow layers, and they get insta-pushed out to the side where possible. It seems like a bug that the full snow layers do not block light.

For the zombie example, was the weather a thunderstorm? I am wondering if there could be a bug with thunderstorm rules overriding block light rules. (See MCPE-112028)

100% Singleplayer Hard Mode Vanilla. Would've had the "Achievements can't be earned in this world" right above the World Name.

Marketplace content other than skins would crash the switch anyway.

This is the same creeper clip. Had to split/crop it to fit the 10mb cap. Anyway, notice that there is no creeper while I was eating, before I head to a water source to use the Trident, leading to the clip in question. Might want to reduce contrast on your device.

And yes, the zombie event is during a thunderstorm.

Resolving as Cannot Reproduce per last reporter comment.
If it occurs again, please provide screenshots that clearly show the entire enclosed area to verify that there is no block with light level 0.

Had another creeper grief that shouldn't happen. So I decided to AFK during nights to catch the bug while I watched some YouTube.

What I know about Bedrock spawn mechanics is that hostiles would spawn in layers, hence the spider below the creeper on the same x, z coords.
MaddHatter's video explains this.

Not too long after I got the 1st clip, zombies pack spawned, also mentioned in the same video.

Apparently, I wasn't the 1st to experience this.

1.16 MCPE-110021 "Works as Intended"
1.16 MCPE-112028 "Fixed"

Seeing as these reports predate 1.17-1.18, this "feature" was understandably intentional when they used to spawn in light level 7 or lower.

I suppose light is no longer a viable spawn proofing method during thunderstorms.
