Minecart stopping on rail and will not proceed when pushed

Steps to reproduce

(full repro in new world shown here: https://youtu.be/BvWQy3EfSRc)

  1. Create a new world, creative mode, coordinates on.

  2. Make a small East-West rail track near spawn out of powered and normal rails. The track should have powered rails next to solid block at each end, one or more normal rails connect to those powered rails, and then a section of powered rails in the middle. I.e. a sequence such as [block, p-rail, rail, 3x p-rail, rail, p-rail, block]. Activate each section of powered rails with redstone in some way.

  3. Place a hopper minecart on the rails and nudge it. Confirm that it moves back and forth along the whole length of the track.

  4. Fly 200 blocks to the east, place a bed, and use it to set your spawn point.

  5. Fly another about another 500 blocks east (possibly the threshold is 2x render distance from the rails).

  6. Set gamemode to survival, then run /kill @s.

  7. Respawn at your bed, then set gamemode back to creative for convenience.

  8. Fly back to the rails and minecart.

Expected result

The minecart continues to move back and forth along the whole length of the track.

Observed result

The minecart stops at a certain point. It will not go past that point even if you push it and break the rails and blocks around that point. New minecarts placed on the track stop at that point as well. The space that stops minecarts seems to be the size of a minecart collision box--see this comment.

My minecarts suddenly began stopping on a single block today. The rail is within a single chunk (does not cross chunk boundary) and is repeatable with me in the chunk watching it happen (IE - I do not log out or leave the chunk in order to trigger the effect of the minecart stopping). The rail is a powered rail, however I tested this with both powered and regular rail and had the same issue. The cart arrives at the affected block and stops as if it was inside a full block (even though was a regular rail block). Further - I tested riding the minecart and attempting to push forward (up arrow) to get past the affected block and the minecart would not move. I appear to have several blocks affected by this issue within the same chunk. At first I thought this effect was because the rails were underwater, however I drained the area and recreated the problem without the water (IE on dry rail). The attached screenshot shows the cart on the rail on the affected block.

I have two separate farms that use powered rails on different Y levels within the same chunk and both worked fine before, however the minecarts of both farms get stopped on powered rails within a few blocks of each other on the X,Z but over 100 blocks away on the Y. One of the farms runs across multiple chunks and has no problems on the other chunks. The issue happens consistently.

This has happened on 4 of my separate farms using hopper minecarts on rails. It appears to happen when leaving and reloading the chunks while the minecarts are in motion. Breaking and replacing the rails and minecarts also do not resolve the issue.

I was able to recreate this issue in creative. By building a rail, flying far away and then dying to reload the area with the rails. I attached a video of me replicating this bug (some parts of the footage a sped up to fit the 10MB limit.

In the creative world, leaving the world and reopening it resolved the stuck minecarts and in the server I'm on a server restart also resolved this issue.

I have the same problems since updating to 1.21.21.

Most of my minecart collection systems just do not work anymore.

The minecarts stops for no apparent reason, just like shown in DisasterCheof17s vidos (see above).

I have no idea why some of my collection system works but others are just completly broken.

This is pure speculation but it seem like the minecarts stop when there is a hopper under the track.

It also seem to have trouble when the track is just back and forth.... I seem to get more success when I build the track as a circle.

Today my carts started working! Not sure if anything was changed by Mojang. Very strange as I made no changes on my side.

@ElScruffed Really? I gotta check my farms when I get home then. Hopefully mine are fixed as well then...

Can confirm this is happening on 1.21.21. Playing on a realm. Minecart stops on a powered rail. It seems to be within the chunk so it doesn't look like chunk borders/corners.

I have had this happen in multiple spots, I see you are able to push it back, I was not able to do that. I am on a server with a few mates, we use rail and carts to get around a few places, half of them had this issue, got a 64 furnace array, the carts didn't even start when the button was pressed

It seems fixed for me as well, like @ElScruffed reported.

I just logged into the game and now the minecarts work again, they do not stop for no apparent reason anymore.

So strange. I guess Mojang fixed something ... could it have something to do with the Realm problems the last few days (I play on a realm)?

So, If you were to die while a preplaced minecart is unloaded, then go to the minecart or minecart variant and load the chunk that it's in. It will make a duplicate of the hit box and the invisible minecart hit box can't be moved in any way?

(I had this problem in a signal player survival world, in the most recent update and on Xbox one.)

This bug can also cause minecarts to get stuck in mid-air.

Boats are floating on this server as well.

The area that is stopping minecarts is about the size of a minecart collision box. It appears that the location of the minecart collision box at load is being cached or duplicated on the server thread.

Note that minecarts are 0.7 blocks in height and when on rails they get elevated by 0.15 blocks, so their top is at 0.9 blocks. That matches the height above the glass at which the minecarts in this video stop falling--just above 7 snow layers in height, and just enough for the minecart that stay on the track to pass under.

We could not reproduce the issue trying on a new flat world, a new world with normal generation, a world that is older and heavier. perhaps this is a low repro one. Also tried preview and retail.
Can you link or upload an example world that the issue reproduces on? If the file is too big, you can upload it to a shareable site (like OneDrive) and link it here.

This ticket will reopen automatically when you reply.

The world seed, age, or save file is not relevant. The bugged minecart collision corrects itself when you relog. It has to be triggered during a play session by loading a minecart, moving away from it, and then moving back to it. Death and respawn before moving back gives a fairly reliable repro, but nether portal travel is suspected of triggering it as well.

Here is a complete video of me repro'g the bug in a new flat world. Note that it does not work the first time I try. I am not sure if that's because I travelled west instead of east, or if it just has a random chance of triggering.

On a server every single minecart in the community industrial was stopped (which is a lot of minecarts). This is a long term world (two years) and many of the farms have been around since the beginning. This has never happened before. Even minecarts that do not cross chunk borders were stopped. When nudged, they would move again.

I am having this same issue, but nothing is solving the issue. I believe since I am on a server hosted by a third-party, that the server will have to be restarted to recreate logging off and re-logging in a single-player world.

Farms are getting so clogged up with ghost minecarts that some of them can no longer be run. Is there any way to fix this bug in game? I tried placing blocks where the minecarts are, and that doesn't fix it. Reloading and logging in and out doesn't seem to help either.

This particular bug is affecting, at this point, every minecart on my Bedrock Realm. I have observed if I Download a copy of the world the Bug does not reproduce but the minecarts remain stalled.  This may be causing the inability to effectively reproduce the bug, which seems to be an issue from reading the comments, even downloading an affected world copy may not effectively reproduce it.  If I download a copy of the Realm, restart the minecarts manually and then upload that version the minecarts will operate bug free for a time but as players move about they will all eventually lock again.  I can state death does not seem to affect it as the main chunks that contain automated farms have not had anyone die with with in them since the last reset.  Though the area does have a lot of Nether Portal Traffic. Also I have noticed mine seem to stall in-between powered and nonpowered rails but that may just be coincidence, (the blocking object appear to be the normal rail that immediately follows a powered rail and will block both directions.)

This bug is occurring in my Minecraft realm on Xbox. After filling a previously empty space (before last update) with a block (after update), then adding rail, mine carts will stop at previously empty spaces. Hopes this helps identify whats going on.

For those asking about a workaround: the only way to clear the phantom minecart collision is to close the world and reopen it. However, if you are playing on a server or realm, you will need to stay out of the realm for 5-10 minutes to allow the server to fully close the world. Realms and servers do not instantly close the world when the last player leaves.

I have encountered this issue multiple times on our realm since the 1.21.23 hotfix.  It affected half of the hopper minecarts under my bamboo farm running on west to east rails.  The carts would all stop on the regular rails just before the power rails that were used to launch them at the west end of the line (powered or unpowered made no difference).  Initially breaking and replacing would fix the issue, but eventually that fixed stopped working.  After I replaced the broken half with hopper minecarts directly over hoppers the other half ended up breaking the same way.

After that I discovered that the hopper and chest minecarts on our super smelter were also getting stuck.  These were on north to south rail lines.  On one level the cart on the west rail worked perfectly while the one just next to it stopped on a random powered rail about half way down the line.  The other 2 carts were stuck on the regular rail just past the initial launching point.  On the lower level all 4 carts were stuck on the regular rail just past the launching point.

Experiancing the same issue on a server someone I know runs. I have about 6 hopper minecarts running, moving various items around. I've been requesting reboots of the server almost daily now. The reboots fix the issue for a little while but then it happens again, the minecarts stick in "random" places along the tracks. I have tried turning all of the minecarts off before leaving the world or even the tick distance however this does not help in my case. The server is running on a linux machine. This was happening before the latest update, however the issue is more frequent now since the update.

I have just opened MC after a few days of not having the PC and the Minecart had stopped again in the lighthouse.  It is in a chunk, so that is not an issue.  The other one in the Iron / Guardian farm had also stopped, again in a chunk.  Upon restarting both mcarts they seem fine for now.

Also happening to me as of the new update 1.21.31. Tried building a super smelter and it was happening with half of the smelter and the other side was working fine. After leaving the area and coming back both sides had the phantom minecart.
